Aristotle’s incomplete syllogism: the argument with one premise left out for the audience to supply. A conclusion someone reaches themselves is one they’ll defend; a conclusion you hand them is one they’ll interrogate. The mechanism is neutral. It sells honest products, and it kept a printing company paying a Google Ads agency to do nothing. Trust is enthymematic all the way down: completed in the audience’s head, never asserted, and therefore spendable by other people.

## Key arguments - A normal syllogism gives you the whole argument. All men are mortal, Socrates is a man, so Socrates is mortal. Airtight, and I don't think anyone in recorded history has been moved by one. - The moment I hand someone a finished argument, the only job left for them is finding the hole in it, and they will, since that's what people do with a conclusion that arrives pre-assembled. - You say 11 hours a week, and then you shut up, and they do the rest of the work themselves with their own numbers. - A conclusion someone reaches themselves is one they'll defend, and a conclusion you hand them is one they'll interrogate. - Give them the number and the context and stop, and let them do the maths. The move is not, this saves you 11 hours a week, therefore you should buy it. The move is, this saves you 11 hours a week. Then silence. - The enthymeme doesn't care which way it's pointing. The same trick that lets an honest number sell an honest product kept me paying that agency to do nothing, and if you only learn the selling half, you've only learned half of what it's for. - Ethos is enthymematic all the way down. It is never asserted, it is completed in the audience's head, and that means it can be drawn on without a single word being said, by whoever can arrange you on a stage. - I'm not going to persuade you. But, welcome. ## My take The mechanism is neutral and it survives being explained: telling someone you've left the conclusion for them doesn't stop it working, which is the test a tactic has to pass (would this work if everyone knew how it works?). Honesty isn't finishing the argument for people. It's what you leave open, and whether the number you leave them with is true. This replaces the moral framing of 'ethical persuasion': the question is never whether persuading is ethical, it's whether the premise you're relying on them to supply is one you'd say out loud. ## Related concepts ## Across the universe - [trafficplusoffer.com/persuasion/](https://trafficplusoffer.com/persuasion/) · That page lists the six heuristics.
