Credibility is conferred by other people, never asserted by you. Announce your own excellence and you have spent ethos, not built it. In New Zealand the tall poppy reflex enforces this openly, and it works as a filter: self-reported status is inadmissible, so status has to be conferred. Search engines run the same rule: a link is a vote someone else cast. Of Aristotle’s three parts of ethos, practical wisdom (phronesis) and excellence (arete) can only be handed to you; goodwill (eunoia) is the one arm you can work on directly. This is the years clock, and it is the pillar you don’t control, which is exactly why it is weighted.
## Key arguments - Same proof, two companies, opposite reactions. One gets, that's impressive. The other gets, yeah, right. Evidence doesn't authenticate itself. Somebody has to be willing to believe you before your numbers mean anything at all, and that willingness is ethos, the clock that runs in years, the one you can't buy this quarter regardless of budget. - In the American model, ethos is mostly asserted. You claim authority, you repeat the claim, and the claim becomes the credential. Thought leader, industry expert, number one in the space. It works there, because the culture will broadly accept a confident self-report as evidence. Try it in Wānaka. - Down here, and I'd argue right across the Tasman, asserted credibility isn't discounted, it's penalised. Announce your own excellence in New Zealand and you haven't built ethos, you've spent it. - We call it tall poppy syndrome and we treat it as a national character flaw, and maybe it is, but it also works as a filter: self-reported status is inadmissible, so status has to be conferred. - If practical wisdom and excellence can only be handed to you by other people, the only arm of ethos you're allowed to work on directly is the goodwill. So the soft one turns out to be the load bearing one in this part of the world, not because we're nicer, but because the other two routes are closed to self service. - You can manufacture your own logos, and you can rent your own pathos, but you cannot issue yourself ethos. Other people can spend yours, but you cannot issue it. So you build the only part you're allowed to build, for years, and you let other people hand you the rest. - Aristotle's claim was that an audience forgives you for being wrong long before it forgives you for not being on their side. - Eunoia is goodwill: you're on the audience's side, and you want them to come out ahead whether or not they buy. Not the performance of it, the orientation. - Our word idiot comes from the Greek idiotes, a private person, someone with no public role, no standing, no reputation in the polis. The Greeks didn't think an idiot was stupid. They thought an idiot was unknown. ## My take Ethos cannot be issued to yourself; it can only be conferred, and it can be spent by others without your consent. So the only honest reputation work is goodwill practised for years, plus making the conferred evidence legible (Trust Signal). Everything that asserts credibility, from 'as seen in' logos to thought leadership, is authority theatre, and both people and machines have learned to penalise it. ## Related concepts ## Across the universe - [thetrustalgorithm.com/authority-theater/](https://thetrustalgorithm.com/authority-theater/) · Theatre is asserted ethos.
