The feed cannot detect a good argument; it detects reactions, so it selects for whatever happens before the thumb moves. Attention is the fastest clock, the biggest payout, the shortest half-life, and the free tier on every platform. Short form is where you get discovered; long form is where you get believed. Every platform keeps getting longer, because reactions don’t need duration and relationships do. Attention is the one thing everyone optimises for that isn’t in the trust formula.
## Key arguments - Pathos doesn't mean emotion, it means suffering. It's the root of pathology, of pathetic, of sympathy, a word for something that happens to you rather than something you chose. - A feed cannot detect a good argument. It has no mechanism for noticing that something is true. It detects reactions, so it selects for content that does something to people, and whatever it does has to happen before the thumb moves. Fastest clock, biggest payout, shortest half life. - That's the currency the algorithm deals in, and it's the only one it deals in, which is fine, as long as you know that's what you're holding. - Anyone who has sat through a workshop about collapsing attention spans has been told that nobody watches past eight seconds, that nobody reads anymore, that you have three seconds to hook or die. Meanwhile, at the top of every format, the winners keep getting longer. - Six seconds can carry a reaction, but it can't carry a relationship. Millions of people knew those faces and knew nothing at all about the people attached to them, which is a fine basis for fame and no basis for trust. - One platform pays you more for going long, the other charges you for the privilege. Neither treats length as free. Attention is the free tier on both. - The length was never meant to be consumed. The length was the event, because a month of continuous broadcast is the one format in which a person cannot maintain a persona. - Nobody was ever short on drama, drama is cheap. What twelve seasons buys you is character revealed slowly enough to be believed. - Attention is cheap and getting cheaper. What's scarce is anyone willing to give you sustained attention, and sustained attention is the only kind that credibility can be built inside. - Short form is where you get discovered. Long form is where you get believed. Confusing the two is how you end up viral and broke. - Close your eyes. Mentally scroll through your browser history. And count how many of those websites you pay to use. All of the other creators are incentivised by money. They are advertisers. Advertising runs the internet. - AI is a great mediocre riser. It's fuelling the collapse of differentiation, because in the past only a big competitor could hire a full content team and compete in ten languages around the world, and now everyone can, so there's no longer any advantage in doing it. Whoever wins, the winner becomes the standard and everyone has access to the standard. End of game. - Rented pathos is deflating toward free. Owned ethos is the one line the noise machine can't print. ## My take The collapsing-attention-span story has it exactly backwards. Attention is the free tier; duration is what's scarce, and duration is the only container credibility can be built inside. Rent attention with your eyes open, and never mistake it for the thing it's meant to buy. ## Related concepts ## Across the universe - [trafficplusoffer.com/traffic/](https://trafficplusoffer.com/traffic/) · Renting attention well is a Traffic problem.
